Getting them to brush

Update (06/29/2018): After a couple of recommendations from readers, the Disney Magic Timer App is the way to go! I posted a review here.

When getting the kids ready for bed, one of the last tasks is brushing teeth. I’ve had some ‘success’ using a few different tactics:

  • Counting to 4 slowly then instructing, “next side!”
  • Setting a 2-minute timer on our phone
  • Giving up and just doing it myself while wrestling them to the ground

Ultimately, it was always like pulling teeth. Recently we’ve been going through different character toothbrushes that light up or play audio. Anything to keep them engaged. That’s why we were excited when Oral-B hooked us up with Stages battery powered Disney Pixar toothbrushes.

Review New Toothbrushes

The kids were thrilled to use the new brushes. The bright colors and Disney Pixar themes were a bonus. We got Monsters Inc and Cars brushes.

They most liked the spinning and vibrating action. That keeps them focused on brushing for the full two minutes. The toothbrushes have two on and off buttons that were easy enough for my 3-year-old to use without a problem.

There is a removable battery, which is nice in case it dies early. However, it’s a 3-month brush so you shouldn’t be swapping out batteries too many times. Replaceable heads would have been nice to keep it longer.

Overall, it’s keeping them engaged while brushing for the full two minutes. I don’t feel the need to go back and brush them once they’re done.

Have you tried the Disney Magic Timer? It basically gamifies brushing. You watch a short (3-5 second) animation or video clip, then it starts a 1 or 2 minute countdown while revealing the digital sticker they get in their sticker book. Every once in a while they unlock an achievement that gives them an extra sticker. You are supposed to unlock each character with each purchase of a tube of toothpaste or toothbrush, but you can also unlock them with pictures on Pinterest.
